UFC strawweight Jessica Aguilar was scheduled to fight Jodie Esquibel at last Friday’s Fight Night card in Utica, New York, but the bout was scrapped on the day of the event due to an undisclosed “medical issue.”
Aguilar claimed that she was pulled due to “chapped lips,” which she later expanded on in an Instagram post.
“The commission had a concern regarding my lips and my use of chapstick during the physical exam prior to weigh-ins so they requested that I be cleared by a dermatologist. So right after weigh-ins the commission rush me to get clearance which I was granted by the dermatologist. But tonight, at the arena, the commission struck again and canceled the fight. You can’t reason with this commission, it kinda felted personal.”
The New York State Athletic Commission has since released a statement on why they removed from UFC Utica. (Via MMA Fighting)
“Medical personnel identified a potentially contagious medical condition,” read the NYSAC statement, via New York State Department of State spokesperson Lee Park. “For the safety of the impacted fighter and her opponent, the fight was called off. UFC medical personnel were also consulted and concurred with the decision.”
The statement later added that Aguilar’s condition “worsened overnight” following the initial doctor’s clearance.
Aguilar’s manager Abe Kawa was critical of the NYSAC in an interview with The MMA Hour on Monday.
“I do think that New York is going to get it right eventually,” Kawa said. “I just think there’s certain people that are there right now that don’t understand what they’re doing, honestly. Not even the sport, just what they’re doing in general. It’s shameful, man. It’s shameful. Jessica didn’t deserve that. She deserved to be able to go out there and fight.”
According to Kawa, the UFC will “take care” of Aguilar’s pay, but would not get into specifics.
Aguilar has had an extremely difficult time being active in the UFC. She’s fought just twice since her 2015 signing, losing to Claudia Gadelha at UFC 190 and Cortney Casey at UFC 211. She suffered a torn ACL prepping for a bout vs. Juliana Lima in 2016, and earlier this year saw a matchup vs. Livia Renata Souza scrapped after Souza broke her hand.
