Robert Whittaker edges split decision after incredible five-round war with Yoel Romero

The middleweight champion admits it was 'real tight' and says he can't feel his hand down to his elbow.

Romero says it was his pleasure to fight Whittaker and thanks the Chicago crowd for coming to the fight. Then adds that in his humble opinion he won the fight and doesn't understand why the commission didn't let him cut the extra weight.

Romero drops him again!! Whittaker turtles up and bides his time trying to see out the final round and take it to the scorecards. Romero is pouring it all on now, expending every last ounce of the energy he's conserved all fight. This is an unbelievable fight. Romero doesn't capitalise on the position on the cage and they're separated. The round ends, the battle ends. How do you score that? To be honest I have no idea.

Romero is back into energy conserving mode after taking a kick to the crown jewels. He's got five minutes to recover and he's going to take plenty of it as he get that air back into his lungs. Whittaker is not throwing his right hand at all and it seems to be damaged. Will Romero notice? At the moment the champion is facing him one handed. Romero rocks Whittaker at the end of the round again! He wobbles but is saved by the bell.

What. A. Round. Incredible stuff. Romero has Whittaker badly rocked and chases the finish with a newfound venom. Whittaker holds on and survives with the Cuban gassed from his exertions. A head kick stuns Romero but he doesn't go down! They're both out on their feet and finish the round grappling on the cage. Both men wobbled and battered but as yet unbowed.

Romero's dreadful weight cut will no doubt play a part over the course of this fight but he's still liable to find a ridiculously powerful weapon in his arsenal and Whittaker is rightly wary of that. The front-leg side-kick is working wonders for the champion, keeping range well. No sign of either man chasing a takedown so far. All of a sudden Romero's eye has swollen up badly and Whittaker lands a sweetly timed high kick to the head.

Whittaker works the low kicks, looking to hyper-extend Romero's knee which looks to be holding up so far. The Cuban is very inactive but then throws a huge bomb and relaxes again, he stays coiled before exploding. The champion is more active, using the jab and landing a could of nice hooks to the ear.

Robert Whittaker has sensational endurance, technique, heart and fight IQ. And he thinks he's improved since the first fight.

Romero brings that x-factor of jaw-dropping power and athleticism, particularly for a 40-year-old. At any moment he can end a fight so although Whittaker is the strong favourite, you're always on the edge of your seat.
